The Rise of Temu and other Chinese cross-border webshops and how to deal with them

China’s cross-border e-commerce platforms, such as Temu, Shein and AliExpress have rapidly gained global standing, disrupting traditional retail markets in Western countries. These platforms offer a wide variety of affordable products, often leveraging China’s manufacturing strength and efficient supply chains to undercut competitors. Their success is driven by direct-to-consumer models, quick delivery, and low pricing. However, European regulators and retailers have raised concerns about unfair competition and quality issues.
On 21 November 2024 the Belgian-Chinese Chamber of Commerce organized a panel discussion about the Rise of Temu and other Chinese cross-border webshops, moderated by Bart Horsten, Managing Director Horsten International and Board Member of the BCECC. You can watch the recording of this webinar here:
We hope that you were able to learn more about how Temu and other Chinese cross-border e-commerce platforms are disrupting retail markets in Europe with their business models, as well as the challenges they pose, particularly concerning competition, quality, and consumer security. Is Temu really serious about dealing with the complaints from consumers and regulators? Are all claims and complaints about their business model correct? What is Temu doing to solve these issues? Should we, as European consumers, be worried about security issues and personal data?

Panellist:
- Ed Sander, China digital tech researcher and writer at Tech Buzz China, public speaker at ChinaTalk and study tour leader at ChinaTechTrip
- Vincent Nys, AI and Innovation Consultant, Head of Innovation & AI at Keyrus
- Moderator: Bart Horsten, Managing Director Horsten International and Board Member of the BCECC
