Dr. Paul Janssen’s (Janssen Pharmaceutica) legacy continues to inspire in China

This year, Dr. Paul Janssen would have celebrated his 100th birthday. Widely regarded as one of Belgium’s greatest scientific entrepreneurs, the founder of Janssen Pharmaceutica built a legacy that continues to influence healthcare and pharmaceutical innovation around the world. Founded in 1953, Janssen Pharmaceutica grew from a small research laboratory in Turnhout into a global pharmaceutical company whose medicines have improved the lives of millions of patients. In 1985, Janssen became the first Western pharmaceutical company to establish a manufacturing facility in China, creating a bridge between Belgian innovation and the Chinese healthcare sector.

The centenary of Dr. Paul Janssen’s birth has not only been commemorated in Belgium, but also in China. Johnson & Johnson China recently shared a tribute on its social media channels, highlighting Dr. Janssen’s pioneering spirit, scientific achievements and lasting impact on healthcare innovation. The continued recognition in China demonstrates how his influence extends far beyond Belgium’s borders.

For Horsten International, this story carries a special significance. Nearly fifty years ago, Joos Horsten was among the Belgian pioneers who became involved in China’s opening to the outside world. Through his work with Xi’an Janssen and the broader Janssen network in China, relationships were established that would later contribute to the foundations of Horsten International. The company’s long-standing presence in China therefore traces part of its origins back to the vision, entrepreneurship and international outlook that characterized Dr. Paul Janssen and the generation of Belgian pioneers around him.
